I’ve put the ASP .91fs up front, and had to put the fairly heavy 3300mah 6V batttery behind the throttle servo to get the CG at 5″ or so. I thought as a result the model would come out overweight, but its tipping the scales at 5 1/2lbs, so lighter than both the reviews linked to from greatplanes.com.

Update: Final weight is 6 1/4lbs, still quite happy with that.

My Blackhorse Blade is nearly ready for her maiden flight. This model is fantastic value, a really nice build, and looks fabulous.

I didn’t make the best job of the cowl, but its not bad for my first GF jobby.

The ASP .61FS is a bit long, and due to the rear mounted carb, it cannot be positioned far enough back for the spinner backplate to line up with the cowl, so there is a bit of a gap

I added two mounting blocks onto the firewall for the cowl, and reduced the gap to the spinner, much happier with it now. Just waiting for 13×6 props to be delivered. Gonna try maiden with 11×6, as props will probably not arrive before weekend.

Update: Maiden postponed due to bad weather (13×6 props have arrived )

Here is a video of an electric powered Blade from www.rcpilot-online.com

Well the SpeedAir 40 has had its final prang. After fixing her up from hitting the electric fence down at Hangar45MFC, I was up at the ShankillRFC fly-in, and on the first flight she went dead stick. The approach looked good, but only a foot or so from landing a cross wind tipped her up on her side and the left wing touched the ground. It didn’t look bad from a distance, and although the flying speed was low, the wing mount was ripped out, and caused multiple cracks in the fuselage. On this occasion the nylon bolts did not break, as a result the fuselage is pretty badly damaged, and I’m unlikely to repair. Time for a replacment model.

I had my battered Speed Air 40 up at the weekend, and despite some issues due to the soaking it got at last weeks funfly, was flying well. After takeoff she veered left and down (as she did at the funfly, before I ditched her in the next field), and I had to hold a lot of right and up to keep her level. The right aileron had become warped due to loose covering, and the lead weight in the tail had become loose , little wonder she was behaving so erratically.

After a serious amount of retrimming, I got her flying mostly straight and level, but the occasional unprovoked dive was perplexing me until after I landed and it became apparent that the lead weight in the tail had worked itself loose, and was flapping around the fuselage. Other than that she was flying great, and really is a blast, and fabulous value.

On coming in to land on my 4th flight I clipped the electric fence protecting the runway, and snapped the fuselage just in front of the horizontal stabliser, should be an easy repair though, and she will fly again, and I might even be able to get rid of the warp in the aileron.

Seeing as I hadn’t flown her for a while I decided to bring my Extreme Stick up during the week.

She flew well, and despite moving the CG back, still required a heap of up elevator to fly level. The Extreme is rather more exciting than the Calmato (I still love it btw), and has a much lower approach speed for landing. I still managed to land a couple of feet short of the runway (this is becoming a bit of a habit), but no damage was caused.

I may bring her up the next time
